What is Kithlane?

Kithlane is a private place online for your family.

It is where you can talk with your cousins, see photos your family shares, look at family pages, find out about family plans, and work on projects.

It is not like other places online. Here is what makes it different:

Your family pays for Kithlane. That is how we make money. We do not make money from you.

Who is in charge here?

Your grown-up is.

The adult who set up your family's Kithlane is called the guardian. That might be your mom, your dad, or another adult who takes care of you.

Your guardian decides things like:

Kithlane does not make these rules. Your family does.

What does Kithlane keep about you?

Not very much. We only keep what we need.

Who can see the things I make?

You choose, every time.

Before you post something, Kithlane tells you who will see it. It says it right there, in normal words. Something like:

If you are not sure, you can pick a smaller group. You can always change your mind before you post.

What about my guardian?

Your guardian can see a lot of what you do in Kithlane. That is on purpose. They are responsible for you.

Can Kithlane workers read my messages?

No — not normally.

The people who work at Kithlane cannot just open your family's stuff and look at it. That is not allowed, and the computers are built to stop it.

If something breaks and we need to fix it, here is what happens:

  1. We ask your guardian for permission.
  2. Your guardian says yes or no.
  3. If they say yes, they choose exactly what we can look at, and for how long.
  4. A timer starts. When it runs out, we cannot look anymore.
  5. Everything we looked at gets written down, and your guardian gets a list.

Your guardian can also say "stop" at any second, and we stop.

Are there exceptions?

Yes. We will be honest with you about them. There are two.

One: if someone might be in danger. If we think a person could get hurt, a small group of trained people at Kithlane may look at what they need to look at, right away, to help. This is rare. It is not for small things. It is for real danger.

Two: if the law makes us. Sometimes a judge or the government can order a company to hand over information. If that happens, we give the smallest amount we are allowed to give. We tell your family about it, unless a law says we cannot.

We are telling you about these on purpose. We would rather you know than be surprised.

What about the Guides?

The Guides are helpers in Kithlane. One might help you understand your homework. One might help your family write down a family story.

Three things to know about them:

1. A Guide is a computer program. It is not a person. It does not have feelings, it is not your friend, and it is not somewhere else waiting for you. It is a tool, like a calculator that can talk.

2. A Guide can be wrong. Sometimes it says things that are not true, even when it sounds sure. If something matters, check it with a real person.

3. A Guide cannot do very much. On purpose. A Guide cannot:

If you ask a Guide to do one of those, it will tell you it cannot. It is not being difficult. It truly cannot.

What if I want to see a website?

Some websites are already approved for you. You can go to those.

If you want a new one, tap Ask a guardian and say what the site is and why you want it. Your guardian will get your request and decide.

If a site is not approved yet, Kithlane will say so. It is not saying you did something wrong. It just means nobody has said yes to that one yet.

When you do leave Kithlane to visit an approved site, Kithlane will tell you that you are leaving. After that, you are on someone else's website. Kithlane does not control what happens there. Be a little careful, the way you would be anywhere new.

What if something feels wrong?

Sometimes something online feels bad. Maybe a message is mean. Maybe something is scary or confusing. Maybe you are just not sure.

Tell a grown-up you trust. That is always the best first step.

Inside Kithlane you can also:

You are never in trouble for asking for help. Not once. Not ever.

If you or someone else is in real danger right now, tell a grown-up near you immediately, or call emergency services. Do not wait for a message to get answered.

Can I see what Kithlane has about me? Can I delete it?

Yes.

Your guardian can ask us for a copy of everything Kithlane has about you. They can also ask us to fix something that is wrong, or delete it.

You can ask your guardian to do this. Tell them what you want, and why.

When something gets deleted, it is really gone from Kithlane. It does not come back later.

The honest part

We built Kithlane to be a good place. We took out the parts of the internet that cause the most trouble: strangers, ads, popularity contests, and feeds that never end.

But we are not going to tell you that nothing bad can ever happen here. That would not be true, and we do not want to say things that are not true to you.

People you know can still be unkind sometimes. A Guide can still be wrong. A website your guardian approves can still have something on it that nobody expected.

So here is the deal:

are honest with you about what we keep and who can see it.
